すべての学生のみなさん、保護者の皆様

新学期にあたって

いよいよ明日から春学期の授業が始まりますね。今学期はパンデミックの影響を受けて、学生のみなさんと社会全体の安心と安全のために、異例の春学期となります。現在、世界中のほとんどの大学が、本学で開始するのと同じような形で授業に取り組んでいます。本学では緊急事態宣言下に授業を開始するにあたり、教職員が協力して、大学の学修環境を整える準備を続けてきました。本学の教職員は、学生のみなさんのために、与えられた環境の下で学びを最大限サポートします。

新入生のみなさんは、同級生や教員と直接会うことができないまま、明日から授業になりますね。また新入生を含む在学生のみなさん全員が、オンラインでの授業に初めて出席します。教える私たち教員も、試行錯誤を繰り返しながら授業を展開していくことになります。学生のみなさんは本学教職員といっしょに、海図のない航海にでかけることになります。

とは言え、開講する科目数はほぼ昨年度の水準を維持します。新設科目もあります。初回授業で授業内容の説明を聞けば、春学期にカバーする内容はすでに公開されているシラバスの内容と変わらないことがわかるでしょう。異なるのは授業の実施方法だけです。文部科学省から言われるまでもなく、大学教育にふさわしい教育の質と量は保証いたします。

他方、新しい授業形態は新しい可能性を開くことでもあります。教員は、直接会って説明できない分、みなさんによりわかりやすく説明をすることになります。学生のみなさんは、通学に充てていた時間を予習や課題作成に回すことができるし、授業時間外に教員にオンラインで質問することも気軽にできるようになります。少し控えめな学生のみなさんは、遠隔授業のせいで、かえって自分の居場所を見つけやすくなるかもしれません。私たち教員は、今までよりはるかに多くの時間を授業準備や課題の確認などに費やすことになりますが、それもみなさんの学修環境を確保し、さらに教育を充実させるために必要なことと理解しています。

学生のみなさん、みなさんの人生はみなさん一人ひとりの人生です。この世界的な危機のただなかにあって、人生を充実したものにするか、環境や人のせいにして無駄に過ごすかは、みなさんの姿勢にかかっています。みなさんには、大学生として、自分のことは自分で考えられるようになってほしいと思います。大学はそのサポートをします。わからないこと、心配なこと、迷っていること、困ったことがあったら、ぜひ授業担当の先生、指導教員の先生、あるいは大学の担当課に問い合わせてください。きっと解決の糸口が見えてくると思います。

新学期を始めるにあたり、学生と保護者の皆様に、学生に寄り添う本学の方針についてご理解とご協力をいただければ幸いに思います。

As We Begin Our New Academic Year

Spring semester classes will finally start tomorrow. Due to the impact of the pandemic, this semester will be an unusual semester in order to ensure the safety and security of all students and society at large. Most universities around the world are now conducting their classes in a similar fashion. As our university begins classes under a national state of emergency, faculty and staff have worked together to prepare the university’s learning environment. We continue to be committed to providing the best possible support for all our students to learn in the given environment.

First year students, it is a pity you will be attending classes tomorrow without first meeting your classmates and faculty in person. All current students, including first years, will be attending online classes for the first time. We, the instructors, have gone through a process of trial and error to develop our online curricula. Faculty and staff of the university will embark with students on a voyage without a nautical chart.

Nevertheless, the list of courses offered will remain largely unchanged, and there are new courses starting this year. If you read the syllabi, you will know that the contents covered in the spring semester are unaltered. The only difference is the way classes are taught. Regardless of what Japan’s ministry of education professes, we as a university guarantee the quality and quantity of education that is appropriate for a university education.

At the same time, the new teaching format may open up new opportunities. Since faculty members are not able to meet students in person, they will explain things in a way that is easier for everyone to understand. As students no longer commute, they can spend the time reserved for commuting to prepare for class and do assignments, while being able to ask questions online of their instructors outside of class hours more easily. If you’re a shy student, distance learning may make it easier for you to find a place to belong. We, the faculty, will be spending much more time preparing for classes and reviewing assignments, but we understand that this is necessary and desirable to ensure your learning environment and to further enhance your education.

Students, your life belongs to you. In the midst of this global crisis, it is up to you to make your life more fulfilling or to waste it blaming the environment and other people. I strongly suggest you learn to think for yourself as a college student. We support you. If you have any questions, concerns, hesitations, or problems, please contact your instructors, academic advisor, or the university office in charge. We are prepared to listen to you. I’m sure you will be able to find a solution.

Last but not least, I convey my sincere appreciation to you and your guardians for understanding and supporting this university’s endeavor to promote a student-first education.
